You can place the blocks displaying the month on top of the day blocks or vice versa. The shabby-chic, retro finish makes a great statement in both a modern or more traditional home!

3 | Echo Dot

Amazon Echo Dot
Wow, where to begin? Amazon’s Echo Dot is such a cool gadget. It’s perfect for anybody who works from home. I surprised a bunch of my family with Echo Dots last year, and they were amazingly well received. The Echo Dot had made big waves then because it was the first hint of what a ‘smart home’ could look like. So what’s this tiny, palm-size gadget all about? The command ‘Alexa’ wakes up the device. Once ready, Alexa has a host of cool features at the ready. I am just going to mention the ones that we use the most.
  • “Alexa, resume my last audiobook” (works with our Audible subscription)
  • “Alexa, play playlist Calm, Cozy, Crafternoon.”
  • and “Alexa, turn off the living room lights.”
The last command enables Alexa to communicate with the Philips Hue lighting system. The point here is that I’ve just listed a few commands. ‘Alexa’ can do so much more which is why it’s part of the list of gift ideas for friends who work at home. You can add ‘skills’ (similar to apps on your phone) to enhance the Echo’s feature-set. Want to add appointments to your Google Calendar? No problem. Want to use Alexa for hands-free voice calling? You’ve got it! Ask the weather forecast for the next day? Sure thing! Want Alexa to tell you a joke. Go right ahead.

4 | Audible Subscription

Gift ideas for friends who work at home: An Audible Subscription
Audible is by far my oldest and my favorite subscription service. Look for an upcoming post in which I dive into more details of why I think Audible subscriptions are awesome. Audible books are great to listen to during long hours of work (depending on the type of work you do of course), driving, housework, at the gym, on long walks, in the shower. The list is endless. Ok, once you listen to audiobooks in the shower it means you’re hooked. If you are brainstorming gift ideas for friends who work at home an Audible subscription may just be perfect. Audible readers/listeners can pay the list price of the book or purchase credits that can be redeemed for any book. Almost every book equals one credit, there are very few books that require two credits. Even really long books, like Ken Follet’s ‘Pillars of the Earth’ (which is over 40 hours of listening time) are just one credit. Of course not every book is that long. You can choose to gift 3, 6, or 12 credits. Awesome combo gift idea: Amazon’s Echo Dot and Audible. Why? Because you can listen to audiobooks on your Echo Dot. Ninja-Tip. If you’re not familiar with Audible, you can try Audible and get 2 Free Audiobooks.

5 | LED Desk Lamp

TAO Electronics Desk Lamp
I’m admittedly a bit obsessed with lights and having the right lights. When it comes to practical gift ideas for friends who work at home this one is pretty high up on my list. I believe that making sure that your workspace is well lit is directly correlated to your productivity and your happiness. Poorly lit spaces are simply not inspiring. TaoTronics is a company I discovered last year, and  I bought three of these desk lamps for our home office. You can rotate the lamp up to 90 degrees side-to-side and 135 degrees up and down. At the base of the lamp is a USB outlet which allows you to charge one device via USB. And the 10 soft-touch controls let you customize the brightness from dim to pleasantly bright. In addition to the ten brightness level, there are five pre-set color temperatures:
  • Natural Light
  • Cool White
  • White
  • Yellow
  • Warm Yellow
that allow you to fine-tune the light even further. Between adjusting color temperature and brightness, you’ll have plenty of options to find the perfect lighting setup. The LED Desk Lamp lamp is a lot cheaper than the Philips Hue I talked about in my Ultimate Gift Guide For The Tech Girl In Your Life post, but you’ll get plenty of cool features.

6 | Alera Neratoli Office Chair

When I began compiling gift ideas for friends who work at home the Alera Neratoli Office Chair was one of the first things I thought of. Having a good office chair is key to productive work day. This office chair offers form, function, and affordability. We own two of these for several years and have been very satisfied. The chair has three color options: red, white, and black. It has a kind of waterfall seat design which reduces pressure on your back and knees. The seat height is adjustable, and it comes with that all-important tilt and swivel. I don’t know about you, but a good office chair ought to swivel properly. And last but not least, Alera offers a five-year warranty.

7 | Mount-It! Adjustable Standing Desk

Adjustable Standing Desk
We all know that spending long hours sitting is bad for us. It’s terrible for our backs, knees, and shoulders all the way to our cardiovascular system. Because my husband has always been a fan of a standing desk, we have one standing desk and two sitting desk in our office. But not everybody can dedicate this amount of space to a home office (years ago our home office consisted of a converted closet space!). That’s where the Mount-It! Adjustable Standing Desk provides a viable alternative. It’s both a sitting and a standing desk. Put it on the desk area of your choice and adjust the height from 1.3 inches all the way to 16 inches. There are plenty of similar desks available; this seems to strike a good balance between affordability, functionality, and sleek, modern design.

8 | Anti Fatigue Mat

Anti Fatigue Mat
Full disclosure, the first time I bought an anti-fatigue mat I felt a bit like an old lady. We have hardwood floors in our kitchen, and I purchased our first anti-fatigue mat to make standing on bare feet over longer periods of time less painful. We have since added two additional anti-fatigue mats. And I will readily admit that it’s been a real game changer. Although I knew that alternating between sitting and standing was better, I always found the floors to be too hard to stand on for any length of time. So if you have a friend or family member who already has a standing desk in their home office, this could be a real asset for them. And if you know somebody who has been thinking about incorporating a standing desk into their home office setup, the Adjustable Standing Desk and the Anti Fatigue Mat are a great gift combo. I hope you’ve enjoyed my gift ideas for friends who work at home. What are your favorite gifts to give somebody who works at home? Are you working at home? As always I’d love for you to share your thoughts in the comments or tag me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. Happy Shopping, Maike
